Greek law enforcement officials said tonight that they had found and seized 680 tons of explosives from a boat off the country’s western coast. A spokesman for the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry said officials had not yet determined what the explosives were intended for or much else about the boat and its seven crew members, five from Ukraine and two from Azerbaijan. But the spokesman, Panayiotis Tsianos, said that Greek officials were drawn to the boat after receiving a tip. “While it’s not unusual to see explosives as cargo, this quantity is extremely rare,” Mr. Tsianos said. He also said that it “raised an eyebrow” that the boat was flying a flag from Comoros. Such a flag is considered a flag of convenience, he said, meaning that it is easy for a crew to get it without having to submit to aggressive security and background checks. Full Story
