Americas Colombia Rebels Seek Talks with Regional Leaders

Colombia’s main leftist rebel group is calling for talks with regional presidents to explain its point of view on Colombia’s four-decade civil war. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, wants to meet with leaders from the 19-nation Rio Group. Last month, Latin American presidents discussed the conflict with Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe at the Rio Group summit in Cuzco, Peru. After the talks, the Rio Group called on the United Nations to pressure the FARC to agree to a cease-fire and enter peace negotiations. In its open letter to the Rio Group presidents, the FARC said it wants its voice to be heard on the matter. It proposes choosing a location both sides could agree on for another forum like the one in Cuzco. Full Story
