Terrorism is a threat to all democratic countries in the Americas, not just Colombia, Secretary of State Colin Powell said in an interview with CNN in Santiago, Chile, on June 9. Powell expressed strong support for the efforts of President Uribe of Colombia to move strongly against the guerrilla organizations that constitute “a threat to the viability of Colombia as a democratic country.” In response to widespread criticism of U.S. policies in the Middle East and elsewhere, Powell said, “I think that, over time, people in Latin America will realize that the United States took the correct action in dealing with Iraq.” He expressed optimism about the overall course of U.S. relations with Latin America, based on their common values of democracy, rule of law, and open trading systems and free markets.
