Peru’s President Alejandro Toledo Denies Guerrilla Activity Making a Comeback. President Alejandro Toledo denied Wednesday that terrorism was on the rise, a day after a band of guerrillas released 71 hostages seized at a pipeline construction camp. “Terrorism isn’t making a comeback in Peru,” Toledo said during a diplomatic ceremony. The president also rejected criticism that the nation’s ability to fight insurgencies has been weakened by the recent reform of harsh anti-terrorism laws decreed a decade ago by Peru’s authoritarian former President Alberto Fujimori. “Who says that only dictators can put the house in order” he said. Shining Path guerrillas freed the hostages unharmed on Tuesday less than 36 hours after taking them captive. Some 500 soldiers and police were in hot pursuit of the rebels, combing jungle-covered gorges about 250 miles southeast of Lima. Full Story
