The alleged Singapore chief of the Jemaah Islamiah Muslim militant network told an Indonesian court Wednesday the group had planned to attack U.S. military facilities in the city state. The plans were foiled, but the comments by Mas Selamat Kastari were the first public admission by any Jemaah Islamiah leader that the radical group had targeted Singapore. He said the order came from an Indonesian preacher called Hambali, whom Jakarta has said is the former operations chief of Jemaah Islamiah and the region’s most wanted terror suspect. “In Singapore there was a plan to use violence — to be precise destroy — parts of American bases there,” Kastari said during the treason trial of Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged leader of Jemaah Islamiah.
