A suicide attacker who killed four German soldiers in Afghanistan was a member of Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network, Germany’s defense minister said Wednesday. But officials in Afghanistan said they were still investigating the attack. The German soldiers and at least one Afghan civilian were killed Saturday when an explosives-packed vehicle pulled up alongside a convoy of buses taking the soldiers to the airport to fly home. Another 39 people were wounded. “It has now been determined that the attacker belonged to the al-Qaida terror organization,” Defense Minister Peter Struck said Wednesday on German television. He did not identify the attacker, but said the man also had links with forces of renegade warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and Afghanistan’s former Taliban regime. In Kabul, however, the police commander in whose district Saturday’s attack took place said he was unaware of any proof of links to al-Qaida or their allies. Full Story
