A U.S. soldier has died in Iraq after being wounded in an attack on a checkpoint in a town north of Baghdad, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday. The soldier died Monday evening after the attack with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades near the town of Balad, it said. U.S. troops have been targeted in a series of attacks since the end of the war that toppled president Saddam Hussein. Residents of the town said two other U.S. soldiers had been wounded in the attack, and that hostility toward the Americans was mounting. “At midnight we heard rocket-propelled grenades being fired and after that the Americans opened fire and started to shoot randomly at nearby houses,” said Mahmoud al-Ubaidi, a farmer who lives nearby.
