American Treasury officials designated an international Muslim charity yesterday as a financial sponsor of terrorism, accusing it of bankrolling Hamas, the militant Palestinian group that has claimed responsibility for suicide attacks in Israel. The move makes it illegal for American citizens to donate money to the charity, Al Aksa International Foundation, and blocks the group’s access to the American financial system. In a tandem action, British Treasury officials froze Al Aksa’s assets. The moves, part of an international effort to shut down the group, were the latest efforts against Muslim charities suspected of playing important roles in financing terrorism. Al Aksa was based in Aachen, Germany, until officials there shut it down last year, and it has branches elsewhere in Europe and in the Middle East and Africa. Full Story
