A man today denied murdering Belfast lawyer Pat Finucane when he appeared in court. Ken Barrett, aged 40, was arrested by detectives from Scotland Yard chief Sir John Stevens’ team examining alleged security force collusion with paramilitary killers in Northern Ireland. Their inquiry centres on the assassination of Mr Finucane in February 1989 – one of the most controversial murders in the history of the 30–year conflict. At Belfast Magistrates Court today senior detectives disclosed that they were able to charge Barrett following two covert operations which were launched last year. Detective Inspector Hilary Warnock of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Mr Barrett has made certain comments to officers involved in the undercover operation.” Full Story
