The Indian army killed three Islamic rebels when columns of troops poured into southern Kashmir, after a night of violence left a soldier and a civilian dead, officials said. The operation was launched overnight in Kashmir’s southern Anantnag district after the Indian army received information about the movement of separatist rebels, an army officer told AFP. He said firing began in the early morning in the village of Danav Kanimarg and the ensuing “fierce gunbattle” left three rebels dead. “We are ascertaining the identity of the three,” he said. Troops have moved into the mountains of Pir Panjal range in the Damhal Hanjipora area of the district to arrest or eliminate militants hiding in the higher reaches, the officer said. Full Story
