Confusion still abounds as to whether the last fifteen European tourists held hostage in the Algerian desert have been freed. The fate of the second and final group of European tourists kidnapped in the Algerian desert remained unclear Tuesday a day after local and international media had reported that the tourists were freed. Algerian armed forces denied the reports in a military communiqué read out on Algerian state radio Monday evening. “All efforts continue to be undertaken by the armed forces and the security forces to liberate them,” according to the statement. Reuters reported that both German and Swiss foreign ministries declined to comment whether the remaining 15, including 10 Germans, four Swiss and a Dutchman had been released.
