Tension runs high ahead of Samudra’s trial as Indonesia deals with bomb hoax and stays on alert for Al-Qaeda attacks. Indonesian prosecutors yesterday filed formal charges against Imam Samudra, the alleged mastermind of last year’s Bali bombings, amid tension over worldwide alerts of possible Al-Qaeda strikes. A day after the United States raised its terror threat indicator to the second level, a Central Jakarta building – which houses the offices of GE Finance Indonesia, Nike and Asian Development Bank – was evacuated after a bomb threat was received. It turned out to be a hoax. Tenants of the Bank Rakyat Indonesia Building II were allowed to return to their offices after a police squad spent two hours doing a bomb sweep of the building and declared it safe. It was the second time in two months that the tenants had faced a bomb threat. The authorities seemed to treat yesterday’s incident more seriously though, office workers noted.
