The Lebanese army has arrested more suspected members of a terrorist network that allegedly had planned to assassinate the American ambassador and attack the U.S. Embassy and other Western targets, officials said Thursday. The arrests occurred last week, and the army said the sweep had crushed a nine-member terror cell — seven Lebanese and two Palestinians. A senior Lebanese security officer told The Associated Press the arrested men also planned to kidnap government Cabinet ministers and legislators as bargaining chips to win freedom for imprisoned radicals. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was not known if the arrested me were linked to al-Qaida. “Lebanon is resolved to prevent attempts by any terrorist or extremist groups to destabilize the country. The anti-terror campaign was stepped up after we received information that terrorist groups were preparing to strike,” the officer told the AP. Full Story
