Some background on the Salafist Group for Call and Combat, known by the French-language initials GSPC: — The group is one of two remaining Islamic insurgency movements fighting to install an Islamic state in Algeria. Algerian authorities accuse the group of kidnapping at least 17 of 32 European tourists starting in mid-February. — Algerian, European and U.S. officials have linked the group to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida terrorist network. The GSPC was created in a 1998 split with the radical Armed Islamic Group, or GIA. The dissidents reportedly were discontent with civilian massacres carried out by the GIA.
