One Mozambican worker lost his life on Friday, when police opened fire on a crowd of strikers at the natural gas processing centre under construction at Temane, in the southern province of Mozambique. The workers are employed by the Group Five/CMC consortium (South African and Italian firms), contracted for building work by the South African petro-chemical company Sasol, which has the rights to the Temane and Pande gas fields. According to a report on Radio Mozambique, the disturbances began when workers protested at the sacking, without prior notice, of 12 of their colleagues. A spokesperson for the natural gas project confirmed to AIM that there had been one fatality. “Given the volatility of the situation, it was necessary to resort to police intervention”, she said. “The situation was out of control”.
