A Saudi diplomat who was expelled from the United States last week denied in remarks published on Monday any links to terrorist groups and said he had not even been aware that he was being deported when he left the country. The Los Angeles Times reported last week that Saudi consular official Fahad al-Thumairy was held for two days and expelled on suspicion of having links with “terrorists.” On Sunday, a Saudi diplomatic source denied the charges and said the kingdom had asked the State Department to find out the reasons for Thumairy’s expulsion. Speaking to the Arabic-language newspaper Asharq al-Awsat after returning to Riyadh on Friday, Thumairy said he had not been aware that he was being deported. “Immigration officials at the (Los Angeles) airport told me that the issue was linked only to the revoking of my visa and raised no other demands or suspicions,” he said.
