Four senior Aceh rebel representatives held by Indonesia are officially suspects in bomb attacks, police said on Saturday, in a move likely to further set back an already crumbling peace process.
“The four detainees are now officially suspects for violations of (articles) of the anti-terrorist law” and other statutes, police spokesman Sayed Hoesainy told reporters. He was referring to four representatives of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) who were part of a joint committee overseeing a peace pact in the troubled province and who were seized at the Banda Aceh airport on Friday as they tried to leave the provincial capital, 1,060 miles northwest of Jakarta. The charges were in relation to suspected involvement in bombings in Jakarta and Medan, Hoesainy said. “The law permits us to arrest people who are related to organized crime activities even if they did not execute the crime,” he said without elaborating.
