Two homemade rockets fired from the Gaza Strip slammed into the southern Israeli town of Sderot on Friday, slightly wounding a child, a day after Israel killed a leading Palestinian militant in a helicopter attack. Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed persisted ahead of the arrival on Saturday of Secretary of State Colin Powell on his first visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories in 13 months. He will try to promote a U.S.-backed ‘road map’ to peace. In what Palestinian officials condemned as an attempt to sabotage the peace plan, Israel killed Iyad al-Beik, 27, of the Islamic group Hamas, in a helicopter missile strike in Gaza on Thursday. Israel called his killing ‘self-defense.’ Hamas has carried out dozens of suicide bombings in Israel during a 31-month-old Palestinian uprising for statehood.
