Spain welcomed a decision by the United States to add, at the request of Madrid, the radical Basque nationalist party Batasuna and its predecessors to its list of “terrorist” groups that face sanctions. Interior Minister Angel Acebes said the decision was “magnificent news”. “Now everbody knows who is who and understands the ramifications of the terrorist organisation ETA”, he said, referring to the armed radical Basque nationalist group. Jesus Caldera, spokesman for the opposition Socialists in parliament, said the US decision was “positive” and only logical after Spanish judges ruled that Batasuna was part of ETA’s network and banned the party.
