The last unit of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) left Bunia in the DR Congo’s Ituri region last evening, leaving the town at the mercy of looting Lendu militias. Brig. Kale Kaihura, the overseer of UPDF operations in Bunia, was scheduled to arrive last night aboard an Antonov 12 plane. “It is all over for us. We have now totally ended our presence in Bunia. Other soldiers are walking to Aru and Mahagi. In two or three days, all our soldiers will be back home,” army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza said. Hema chiefs said about 10,000 fleeing Hema civilians were trekking to the Uganda border. The 700 Kinshasa security personnel and 200 Uruguayan UN troops have not stopped the mayhem. Full Story
