A ruling-party mayor was arrested on charges he shot and killed an opposition campaign worker who had been painting his party’s logo on a roadside, Guatemalan police said on Wednesday. Hugo Cal, Guatemalan Republican Front mayor of San Cristobal Verapaz in central Guatemala, allegedly shot Unionist Party campaign worker Byron Mo, 20, on a rural highway after accusing him of painting over ruling party logos, police said. Guatemalan analysts fear an increase in political violence ahead of the November presidential elections in this Central American nation where simmering tensions have increased since 1996, when a 36-year-old civil war ended.
