Indonesia’s military chief told several thousand troops on Wednesday to brace for war in Aceh if separatist rebels in the country’s westernmost province refused to lay down their weapons. Speaking in the city of Surabaya to around 6,000 marines and naval officers on standby for an attack, military commander General Endriartono Sutarto said the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels had five days to surrender their weapons. “If they don’t do it, the TNI (military) will fight them with its weapons,” Sutarto said. “The government of Indonesia’s priority is a bloodless resolution but GAM has refused to honor that stance,” he added.
