The United States is preparing to release another small group of “detainees” from among more than 600 held in the war on terrorism at a U.S. military prison in Cuba, defense officials said on Monday. The officials, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters about a dozen prisoners would be released in the coming days from the high-security prison at Guantanamo Bay and that some might be juveniles. They declined to elaborate, but denied that the plan to release the detainees from about 660 at the base was prompted by a letter to the Pentagon from Secretary of State Colin Powell calling for faster action in determining the fate of hundreds of suspects captured during the war in Afghanistan. “Absolutely not,” said one official when asked whether the planned transfer of prisoners back to their country of origin was in response to Powell.
