A gunman has shot dead the mayor of a Sicilian town and four other people. He burst into the town hall of Aci Castello, 10 kilometres (six miles) from Catania and opened fire, killing four. On his way out, he shot dead an elderly man who was sitting on the main square. The gunman is reported to have been recognised by several eyewitnesses. Carabinieri paramilitary police are searching for a 32-year-old man described as a town hall employee on a short-term contract.
