Is he a closet terrorist, the seventh member of a sleeper cell here, who plotted to travel to Afghanistan to join a holy war against the United States? Or is the 39-year-old Palestinian immigrant – a U.S. citizen, six-figure software engineer, husband and soccer dad – a victim of nothing more than guilt by association? The government’s coast-to-coast search for terrorists since 9/11 has netted charges against 17 men and one woman, the alleged masterminds of terror cells in Portland, Seattle, Detroit and Buffalo.
