Swift US victory in Iraq a boost for Muslim moderates: Singapore minister

The swift US-led victory in Iraq has bolstered the position of moderate Muslims in Southeast Asia and set back the region’s extremists, Singapore Trade Minister George Yeo said. With the war over, the reaction of Southeast Asia’s Muslims will now depend on how the United States handles the governance of Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Yeo said in a speech to the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington released to media here Tuesday. “In Southeast Asia, the rejoicing in Baghdad took the wind out of the sails of Muslim extremists although a few in bitter anger might be tempted to join terrorist oraganizations,” he said. “For the time being, the position of moderate Muslims has generally been bolstered, although the mood remains sombre.
