Just when people thought it was safe to go back to Jakarta, the bombers are back and there seems to be little the security forces can do to stop them. The United States Embassy said last Friday that it was all right for families of staffers to return here after a six-month mandatory evacuation. The move was a vote of confidence for Indonesia that suggested that security, after the arrests of possible terrorists and successful investigations into the Bali case, had vastly improved. Perhaps Sunday’s airport blast – and last Thursday’s explosion behind the United Nations building in Jakarta as well as three others earlier this year – will keep people on their toes.
