Alexander Kostyuk, 23, a security guard at the Kfar Sava train station, was killed yesterday in a suicide bombing he tried to avert when he stopped the bomber at the entrance to the station during the morning rush hour. Fourteen others were wounded, mostly lightly, but two were in serious condition in hospital. The bomber, identified as 18-year-old Ahmed Khaled Khatib of Balata, was said to be from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the Fatah-affiliated underground. There was much speculation over whether the bombing was a message to the newly formed government of Abu Mazen, who has said he will disarm the group. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz held an assessment session with the defense establishment and army officers, deciding to continue current counter-terrorism policies in the territories, and not respond specifically to the Kfar Sava bombing.
