Nobody believes a return to war is imminent in Sri Lanka, but it is clear the island’s peace process has hit an impasse. Tamil Tiger rebels pulled out of peace talks earlier this week, saying the government was trying to marginalise their role in the negotiations. Despite the talk of the security forces being put on high alert, there’s little sense of panic. Even opposition parties who met journalists don’t seem to think that the war is about to resume. The strategy may backfire because it weakens the current government’s position. And the Tigers themselves have been quick to reassure people in the north of the island that the suspension of talks does not mean a breakdown of the truce. Full Story
