Lanao Rebel Siege Dooms Palaro

Some 3,000 heavily-armed Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels attacked the town of Maigo, Lanao del Norte yesterday, threatening anew the holding of this year’s Palarong Pambansa, two days after local and sports officials assured its unhampered staging. Two people were killed and four others wounded in the latest of a series of clashes between the rebels and the military in the south while close to 1,000 civilians were reportedly being held hostage. The MILF rebels also blasted and destroyed the Baronguison bridge which links Maigo to the towns of Kolambugan and Tubod. Maigo is 50 kilometers away from Tubod, the main hub of the Palaro set May 4-11 and the damaged bridge was along the route from Iligan City where the bulk of the athletes would disembark for the Palaro site. This came about even as five talent-laden regions have reportedly decided to skip the annual games, citing parental concern due to the peace and order situation in the area. Full Story
