It’s the classic moment from the Western genre. “Hold it, boys,” cries the damsel in distress. “There’s a new sheriff in town.” The guys in the black hats glance up and see our hero, Steven Bilodeau, atop his figurative white horse, charging hard into that wild, wild west known as cyberspace. The Edmonton lawyer is the only prosecutor in Canada devoted exclusively to cleaning up Internet crime. “EBay is a dangerous place,” snarls the modern-day champion of law and order. By the time Bilodeau’s done, he hopes the site will be a lot safer for ordinary folks. “People are putting things up for sale on eBay, receiving the money, then not shipping the product.” The lawman shakes his head in disgust. “We prosecute the ones where the person committing the fraud is in Alberta.” He doesn’t have the resources to round up a posse and go after the bit players, but if you’re making a living cheating people on the Internet, you better watch out –Bilodeau is on the case.
