Sri Lanka on red alert as Tigers quit talks

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga placed security forces on a virtual war alert after Tamil Tiger rebels suspended peace talks with her government, a spokesman said. Kumaratunga, who is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, ordered the new security measures at an overnight meeting with military top brass and was huddled in talks Tuesday, a spokesman for her office said. A statement from Kumaratunga’s office said she discussed the latest developments with her arch political rival, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. “They had wide ranging discussions on current national issues, in particular the letter of (Tamil Tiger chief negotiator) Mr. Anton Balasingham,” the statement said. The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) announced in a letter to the Prime Minister Monday that they were suspending talks with the government after accusing it of failure to deliver on “critical issues”.
