The authorities in Nepal have announced that peace talks aimed at resolving the country’s long-running conflict with Maoist rebels will begin on Monday. Government negotiator Narayan Singh Pun said the two sides would meet for an introductory session, with extended negotiations on substantive issues expected to follow a few days later. The Nepalese Government has indicated it wants to discuss humanitarian issues before taking up political ones. However, a rebel negotiator, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, said the political agenda should take precedence.
