A new escalation in Burundi’s war is taking place between the government and armed Hutu rebel groups. The army this morning has been fighting back after rebel shelling of the outskirts of the capital, Bujumbura. Rebels have also shelled Burundi’s second largest city, Gitega, leaving it without power and water and damaging the town’s main brewery. The fighting is a setback to hopes that an agreed ceasefire with rebels may stick, ahead of the deployment of an African Union peacekeeping force at the end of the month. Burundi army spokesman, Colonel Augustin Nzabampema, told reporters early this afternoon that both the main Hutu rebel groups, the FDD and the CNDD, have attempted to attack the capital from one of the hills overlooking it using rockets and mortars.
