Three women were wounded when a bomb ripped through a passenger bus near an army checkpoint on the outskirts of this southern Philippine city, the military said on Thursday. The military blamed the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country’s largest Muslim separatist guerilla group, for the blast on Wednesday evening. MILF spokesmen could not be reached for comment on Thursday. The explosive device, fashioned out of a mortar shell, was to have been set off using a mobile phone but had apparently exploded prematurely before the vehicle could reach the checkpoint, said Major-General Generoso Senga, the division commander. The blast set the bus on fire, and three women passengers were injured, a military report said. Maj-Gen Senga said only the MILF had the ‘expertise’ to make such an explosive device in his area.
