The theory in the world of hacking is this: No one can test the security of a computer system better than former attackers themselves. But some security experts say that notion is nonsense. “Breaking in is really easy; it’s preventing it that’s hard,” said Ira Winkler, Hewlett-Packard’s chief security strategist, who insists that the best security testers he’s ever worked with have the squeakiest of clean records.
