Four more killed, military helicopters fired on in Aceh

Three separatist rebels and a soldier have been killed and two military helicopters were fired on during an upsurge of violence which threatens a peace pact in Indonesia’s Aceh province, officials said. The shootings by members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in Central Aceh on Tuesday damaged the helicopters but the pilots made emergency landings, military spokesman Colonel J. Nachrowi said in Jakarta. “We are concerned that the situation is getting worse,” Nachrowi told AFP Wednesday. Increasing violent incidents blamed on both sides are straining the fragile December 9 peace agreement between GAM and the government. Rebels killed a private soldier in a raid on a military post in a remote area of West Aceh on Wednesday, said Aceh military spokesman Major Eddy Fernandi. Full Story
