Defense lawyers failed Monday to get the government’s star witness in the Detroit terrorism case to budge from his testimony that four men were plotting terrorism. “I’m no terrorist, but I know one thing, I helped terrorists get ID,” Youssef Hmimssa, 32, of Morocco snapped at defense attorney James Thomas during his second full day of cross-examination. Throughout the day, Hmimssa, a self-described illegal immigrant, credit card thief and document forger, insisted he is telling the truth about the four men whom he has accused of trying to persuade him to join a plot to recruit, train and arm Islamic extremists to commit terrorism in the United States and overseas. Under questioning by Thomas and defense lawyer William Swor, Hmimssa showed little remorse for the victims of his credit card fraud. He admitted that he does not have the funds to repay the $180,442 he charged with credit card numbers he stole, and said it’s not his fault that the federal sentencing guidelines call for 37-46 months in prison for his crimes.
