Narayan Singh Pun, Minister for Physical Planning and Works and the government co-ordinator for the peace talks with the Maoists, said that the second round of goodwill talks would proceed as the Maoist leaders are being released from government custody. Speaking after inaugurating the three-day Ilam Festival at the local ground today, Minister Pun expressed the hope that Sunday’s goodwill talks with the Maoist negotiating team under Dr Baburam Bhattarai would boost the peace process. “You can term Sunday’s talks formal or informal, anything you like,” said Pun. “As per the Maoists’ demands, we will gradually release the rebel leaders from government custody. This will give the momentum to the talks.” He also said that the government negotiating team will be expanded soon, adding that even the Maoists are desperate for the peace talks. On Sunday, Pun and the full team of the Maoist held a little over half an hour of goodwill talks in the capital.
