A successful hacking attack on the Edmonton Police Association’s Web site is more of an embarrassment than a security threat, says a local hacker. A notice on the police union’s Web site reads: “On Feb. 8, 2003, the banter board was compromised by a person identified only as ‘Ion’. “As such, we are forced to review the continued use of both the banter board and the community areas of this site.” Someone probably was able to get into the site and deface it, said Brad Haines, a local hacker who offers pro-bono information to companies about their security vulnerabilities. Better known in hacking circles as RenderMan, 23-year-old Brad Haines came up on Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) radar after he helped organize a survey in August of wireless network sites in Red Deer.
