Attacks Riddle Afghanistan, Including Shootings and Explosions

Opponents of the Afghan government continued their attacks this weekend. On Saturday, a car packed with explosives blew up in eastern Afghanistan, killing the driver and three others. In the Pakistani border town of Chaman today, gunmen fired on the motorcade of the brother of the Kandahar governor, wounding him and killing another relative. In Kabul, the Afghan capital, a suspected land mine explosion blew a crater tonight that was six feet in diameter in a street about two miles from the center of the city. It caused no injuries and little damage, Agence France-Presse quoted local police officials as saying. The car blast late Saturday in Karwan Sarui, just east of the town of Khost, killed two unidentified Pakistanis and one man from Yemen, said Khial Baz, a regional commander, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Baz said the fourth man was the driver, Bacha Malkhui, an ex-intelligence officer for the Taliban. The car exploded outside Mr. Malkhui’s house, suggesting that the blast was premature.
