Palestinian Police 'Hand over Weapons' to Israel

Palestinian police in Jericho handed over to Israel weapons and explosives confiscated from Palestinian armed groups in an unprecedented move, it was reported today. The decision, the first of its kind during the 30-month-long Palestinian uprising, was taken following the lifting of the year-old Israeli army blockade of the town. Jericho is the only Palestinian town in the West Bank not reoccupied by the Israeli Army when it took over almost the entire territory in June to stamp out militant groups following repeated suicide bombings and gun rampages. The weapons’ transfer, reported in the Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv was approved by Palestinian officials, among them recently appointed Palestinian prime minister Mahmud Abbas, also know as Abu Mazen, the paper said, quoting military sources.
