Separatist rebels in the north-east Indian state of Tripura have abducted nine people and shot and seriously injured a bank manager. The latest attacks are part of ongoing violence that has left 12 people dead in the past four days. The state’s ruling Left Front blames the rebels of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) for the violence which it describes as political. The NLFT has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it is part of its campaign to liberate Tripura from Indian control. Police say eight to 10 heavily armed NLFT rebels stopped a jeep carrying 12 government employees at Baiscard village, barely 20 kilometres from the state’s capital, Agartala, late on Thursday.
