U.S. troops Thursday faced stiff resistance from remnants of Saddam Hussein’s forces in Baghdad and the leaders of the United States and Britain told Iraqis their nation “will soon be free.” Kurdish forces took over the oil city of Kirkuk and the instability following Baghdad’s apparent capitulation Wednesday claimed the life of a prominent pro-U.S. Shiite cleric and his aide. Four U.S. Marines were hurt when a man strapped with explosives approached a U.S. Marine checkpoint in Baghdad and set off the bomb, a Marine spokesman told CNN. The attack occurred around 11:45 EDT. CBS News reported two Marines were killed in the attack. CNN also quoted the Pentagon as saying one Marine was killed and 22 wounded in heavy fighting near a mosque in north-central Baghdad.
