The Israeli air force killed a senior figure in the military wing of Hamas, the Islamic extremist organisation, last night in the first assassination of a Palestinian leader since the start of the Iraq war. A rocket struck a car carrying Saad al-Arabid, 38, number two in the organisation, and two associates, wrecking the vehicle and killing all inside. Two bystanders were killed and about 40 injured. Witnesses said the attack occurred near a mosque during evening prayers. Israel has been picking off the Hamas military leadership recently. The last previous victim was Ibrahim Maqadmeh, one of its founders, who was killed by a helicopter-launched missile on March 9. Full Story
