Three Russian soldiers died in a mine blast in the wartorn Chechen capital Grozny just hours before European Union foreign policy envoys arrived for talks with local leaders. Five or six other people were also wounded in the blast set off by remote control as the soldiers’ armoured vehicle passed over the landmine in Grozny’s Leninsky district, interior ministry officials said Tuesday. During its two-day visit the EU delegation was to meet Akhmad Kadyrov, head of the Chechen pro-Russian administration, and other officials, an EU spokesman in Moscow has confirmed. The group was headed by the Greek ambassador Dimitrios Paraskevopoulos and included Italian ambassador Gianfranco Facco Bonetti and the deputy head of the European Commission (news – web sites)’s delegation in Russia Vincent Piket.
