Israeli AH-64 Apache helicopters fired missiles into a car driving along a street in central Gaza City tonight, killing at least six Palestinians and wounding 48 in an attack aimed at a local militant leader, according to Palestinian witnesses and hospital officials. The missile strike killed an official of the Islamic Resistance Movement, known as Hamas, as well as his bodyguard and another Hamas member, according to a statement from the militant group. A 4-year-old and 15-year-old were also among the dead, a hospital official said. An Israeli security source said the Hamas official, Saed Arabeed, 35, “oversaw the production of Qassam rockets, mortar shells, explosive devices, antitank grenades and grenades” and “took on a central role in the direction of Hamas terror activity both in Gaza and the West Bank.” Tonight’s attack was the second Israeli helicopter strike in the Gaza Strip in less than a week. Two Israeli fighter jets screamed low over the city at about 8:30 p.m. in an apparent attempt to obscure the noise of the approaching helicopters minutes before the Apache gunships fired on the car carrying Arabeed, according to witnesses who watched the aircraft from a high-rise building in Gaza City.
