The UN war crimes tribunal for the first time jailed Bosnian Muslims for atrocities committed against Serb civilians during the 1992-1995 Balkans war, upholding lengthy sentences imposed at an earlier hearing. “The appeals against sentence are dismissed and the sentences imposed by the trial chamber in October 2001 are confirmed,” said presiding judge Theodor Meron in a ruling which is final, and without appeal. The court upheld sentences of up to 18 years in prison for two Bosnian Muslim and a Bosnian Croat convicted of imposing a reign of terror on Serb inmates in the Celebici detention camp in central Bosnia.
