A small homemade bomb exploded outside the British consulate-general in Istanbul causing minor damage but no injuries, Turkish and British officials said. The bomb had been placed in a street adjacent to the consulate. The explosion broke several shop windows, a Turkish security official told AFP, adding that no one had claimed responsibility for the blast. In London, a Foreign Office spokesman said the blast occurred at 12:30 am. The visa section of the building where the explosion occured was empty at the time, he said. Since the beginning of the war against Iraq on March 20, both the British and US visa sections at consular offices across Turkey have been closed to the public. There have been a series of anti-war protests in Istanbul in recent days by those opposed to British and US-led military action, and security has generally been reinforced outside British and US buildings.
