New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday warned that personal injury lawsuits filed by people who claim their long-term health was damaged by the clean-up of the World Trade Center site could bankrupt the city in the next 20 years. Bloomberg made this dire prediction to the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks, according to a written copy of his testimony. This was the first day the commission, chaired by ex-New Jersey Gov. Thomas Kean and charged with investigating the causes of the devastating attacks in September 2001, heard from witnesses. “In retrospect, there is little the city could have done on Sept. 11 to avoid the tremendous loss of life that occurred so quickly after the attacks,” Bloomberg said, adding that what he called airport security’s failure had doomed 2,800 people.
